Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) has announced two grant awards: One funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and another by Gilead Oncology.
These awards, totaling $1,985,000 over 5 years, are focused on supporting distinctive populations impacted by breast cancer, including people diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 45 and their families, and those living with metastatic breast cancer and their families. The awards, announced during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, are expected to educate and support over 400,000 young breast cancer survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer and their loved ones over the next 5 years. The grants are also expected to provide educational materials to over 15,000 health care providers, an approximate 25% increase from those currently reached by LBBC.
LBBC’s 5-year grant award from the CDC will increase availability of and equitable access to psychosocial and structural support services and post-treatment opportunities for people under the age of 45, metastatic breast cancer patients and their families. The grant will also offer technological innovations, and provide educational programs and resources aimed at improving patient-provider interactions throughout treatment and subsequent care, especially for survivor groups that have been economically and socially marginalized.
Both grants demonstrate our commitment to improving the quality of life for all people impacted by breast cancer, including those who face significant health equity barriers.
LBBC’s 1-year grant award from Gilead Oncology enables the nonprofit to work with public health researchers from the Jefferson Health Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center to increase shared decision-making about the importance of targeted treatment options for metastatic breast cancer patients, with specific emphasis on treatment cadence and dosing protocols. This pilot builds upon our priority of improving access and understanding to improve quality breast cancer care, particularly those living with metastatic breast cancer and those who lack access due to low socio-economic indicators, language barriers and low literacy levels. “Both grants demonstrate our commitment to improving the quality of life for all people impacted by breast cancer, including those who face significant health equity barriers,” says Jean A. Sachs, MSS, MLSP, Chief Executive Officer. “Through these grants, we are excited to partner with other nonprofits and academic health centers to expand supports, make good use of today’s emerging technologies and treatment advancements and continue to advance our mission by providing tailored resources to people diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 45, those living with metastatic breast cancer, their families, caregivers, and healthcare providers.”
