Dr. Makhlin then completed his hematology and medical oncology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as chief fellow. During his fellowship, he conducted research on the genomics of metastatic breast cancer under the mentorship of Angie DeMichele, MD, and trained clinically in breast cancer care under Dr. DeMichele and Kevin Fox, MD.

Dr. Makhlin is a breast medical oncologist with an interest in HER2-positive breast cancer. He serves as the site principal investigator for several multi-site clinical trials focusing on both early and advanced HER2-positive breast cancer, as well as for male estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.

Medical education is a key focus of his work. To that end, he lectures on various breast cancer topics to a wide range of learners, including medical students, nurse practitioner students, residents, fellows, medical oncologists, and advanced practice providers. Dr. Makhlin is the director of the Penn Metastatic Breast Cancer Collaborative Tumor Board, as well as co-director of the multi-institutional Philadelphia Breast Cancer Consortium.
