Dr. Welch is chair and professor of cancer biology, founding director of the department of cancer biology, and director for the National Foundation for Cancer Research Center for Metastasis Research at The University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Dr. Welch’s research focuses on tumor progression and cancer metastasis, with particular emphasis on breast, ovarian, colorectal and pancreatic cancer, melanoma, glioblastoma and lymphoma. He serves on the board of directors for the Cancer Biology Training Consortium and is a member of the Extramural Scientific Advisory Board for the American Cancer Society. In the past, he was president of the Metastasis Research Society and chair of the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute Cancer Genetic Study Section. He is a Kansas Bioscience Authority Eminent Scholar.
