Holly Hernandez
Patient Advocate, Nebraska
Highlights
- 2025 Conference on Metastatic Breast Cancer advisory committee member
- 2023 Young Advocate
When her life was unexpectedly interrupted by breast cancer, Holly Hernandez had just given birth to her third child. Breast cancer was the furthest thing from her mind—she was under 40, breastfeeding, and focused on her growing family and career.
Holly bravely faced treatment with a smile, enduring the challenges of chemotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was often the youngest person in the chemo room and navigated her journey without the physical presence of family and friends due to social distancing.
In late 2023, two years after completing chemotherapy, Holly faced another life-altering diagnosis: a recurrence of cancer that metastasized to her lung and brain. With the steadfast support of her husband, as well as her sister and best friend—both of whom are nurses—Holly became empowered through education, working closely with her care team to make informed decisions about her treatment.
Holly has been living—and thriving—with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (MTNBC) for a year. Through her personal journey and professional experience serving the public in state government, she discovered a passion for advocacy. In 2023–2024, she served as a Young Advocate for LBBC, and she continues to make an impact on women who, like her, were blindsided by cancer.
Holly is dedicated to raising awareness among young mothers about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. She shares her story through podcasts, participates in media and scientific advocacy, and works to inspire others with her message of resilience.
In her free time, Holly enjoys spending time outdoors, camping, and traveling to new places with her family.
Cancer has taken away so many things from my family and me. Now, I’m ready to let it give me a way to help others faced with similar news.
