Julia C. Stevenson, MD

Dr. Julia C. Stevenson is a board certified plastic & reconstructive surgeon who was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. She is grateful for the unique educational foundation she received from  Columbus Public Schools and the Columbus School for Girls. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, with a degree in biology where she is also a graduate of the Freddye T. Davy Honors College. Following her academic career at Hampton, Dr. Stevenson earned her medical doctorate at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and  then completed a rigorous 7-year plastic surgery residency at Penn State Hershey.  In 2014, she was the first African American to graduate from the distinguished residency program.

In 2017, Dr. Stevenson moved back to the Hampton Roads region of Virginia to open her medical practice, Cardinal Plastic Surgery. She spent the next year building the practice from the ground up and finally opened its doors in December 2018.  In a world where people look to others to define what is accepted and “good,” she envisioned a practice where people saw themselves as the standard of beauty.  Dr. Stevenson is committed to empowering patients through effective advocacy, education, and the delivery of first-class care.

In addition to her surgical practice, Dr. Stevenson has a passion for community outreach. She is an active member of the Norfolk Section of the National Council of Negro Women, where she joins local organizations to uplift the community through initiatives, scholarship drives, and entrepreneurial workshops.  She has been a member of the Eastern Virginia Medical School-Sentara Community Advisory Board to address health inequities in Hampton Roads, and has volunteered her services as a surgeon through medical mission work in Ghana with Anidaso Health and its affiliate, Salormey Volunteers Group. Understanding the need for representation of African American physicians within the healthcare system, Dr. Stevenson has devoted time to mentorship and educational presentations to Hampton undergraduate and graduate students, as well as local Student National Medical Association programs.

Though not every mentee or student will go into medicine or even the specialty of plastic surgery, Dr. Stevenson’s ultimate goal is to inspire a generation to know they are capable of doing anything for which they have a passion. If God has shown her anything thus far, it is that with Him, all things are possible.
