Lisa Newman, MD, MPH, FACS
Highlights
Dr. Newman is the director of the breast cancer center for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where, as a surgical oncologist, she is also a professor of surgery. Her primary research interests are in ethnicity-related disparities in risk and outcomes for women with breast cancer, the evaluation and management of people at high risk for cancer, broadened applications for induction chemotherapy and special surgical techniques. In addition, she has studied HER2 in breast cancer. Dr. Newman’s research on ethnicity-related risk and outcomes has been widely published and was featured on CNN’s “Black in America 2.”
Dr. Newman is board certified in general surgery and holds a certificate in surgical critical care. She has held positions in research and clinical practice in the surgical breast section at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and was associate director of the Walt Breast Center at Wayne State University in Detroit. She is committed to community service and serves in leadership positions for a variety of oncologic academic and advocacy organizations.
