Study to Evaluate Quality of Life in Women Affected by Breast Cancer
By Mary Alice Hartsock, LBBC Staff; Reviewed by Sara Bourff, MPH, CCRP
If you were diagnosed with breast cancer three to eight years ago, you may be eligible to participate in a quality of life study
Trial Starts: 10/1/2005
Sponsored By: American Cancer Society
A study funded by the American Cancer Society will compare quality of life in women diagnosed at age 45 or younger to that of women diagnosed between ages 55 and 70 and women age-matched to the younger group who have not been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Study Background
Previous breast cancer research on quality of life has focused largely on the concerns of women over the age of 45. The concerns of women under age 45 have not been well addressed.
This study will focus on this gap by comparing quality of life in women diagnosed between ages 18 and 45 to that of women diagnosed between ages 55 and 70 and women age-matched to the younger group who have not been diagnosed with breast cancer. The researchers will measure women’s physical, psychological, social and spiritual functioning.
Who Can Participate?
If you are a woman affected by breast cancer, you are eligible to participate if you:
- Were diagnosed with breast cancer three to eight years ago
- Were ages 18-45 or 55-70 at the time of your diagnosis
- Received chemotherapy as part of your treatment
What Are the Study Requirements?
Participants will complete a written survey and a telephone interview that will include some memory tests to assess your thinking and recall skills (cognitive functioning). You will receive $25 for completing the survey and $25 for the telephone interview. All study requirements will be completed by phone or standard mail. Participation does not require travel.
If you have a partner or spouse who is willing to complete a survey, they also are welcome to participate. They will be awarded $25 for their participation.
You will be asked to provide medical records so that the researchers can support their findings with clinical data. Partners or spouses will not be required to submit medical records.
